[edit] Appearance/History
Danny may have the super powers in his family, but Jazz has the looks, the brains, and the social skills. She wears a black shirt and blue pants and black shoes and a blue hairband on her head. She started off the show as the intelligent older sibling who immediately berated her parents' "sick obsession" with ghosts as well as often overprotecting Danny to the point of annoyance (something she didn't realize back then) while viewing herself as the most normal member of the family.
Though viewers have never seen her with any of her own friends or colleagues at home or school, Jazz has a brilliant mind, is popular and well liked in her school, and studies child psychology; she is frequently trying to stop her parents from thinking about and fighting ghosts in favor of a more normal career. Jazz tends to act a little cold to others, or as Danny put it, like "a conceited snob"; but the viewer often sees a kinder, more compassionate Jazz (even when no one else does), especially in regards to Danny and her parents. She is always looking out for her little brother.
After the events of "My Brother's Keeper", Jazz now believes that ghosts are real as well as finding out about Danny's dual identities when she saw him transforming without his knowledge with his signature transformation words, "I'm Going Ghost". At first, Jazz tried to question Sam and Tucker, Danny's friends, but she soon realized that they would not betray Danny's secret, and later, when Danny rescued her while in ghost form, Jazz pretended to be scared of him and runs away, proclaiming that, "He'll tell me when he's ready". Danny didn't know that Jazz was aware of his Ghost Status who continued to cover for him when he's out capturing ghosts in secret, e.g., "Whatever he's doing, I'm sure it has nothing to do with ghosts."
"Maternal Instinct" started the gradual change in Jazz's view of ghost hunting when she was forced to accompany her father in protecting her home from various mutant ghost animals. In spite of herself, she found herself enjoy ghost hunting. Though she initially did not care for her parents' obessession with ghost-hunting and such, she later learns that she had ghost-hunting in her blood as well when she easily handles herself with the Fenton equipment. This has since carried on in future episodes while later in "The Fenton Menace" Jazz started to embrace her childhood as much as her young adult persona, proving even she doesn't need to be the adult all the time.
It was finally in "The Ultimate Enemy" in which, after Danny reworked the timeline so he wouldn't become Dark Danny, that he found out his sister knew of his identity (when she sent him a note 10 years into the future to inform him about Vlad. Danny recognized her handwriting and that she used her trademark headband to secure the note). Danny and Jazz, in a touching moment hugs, finally able to get past the secret and grow closer together, making Jazz the newest member of Team Phantom.
After that event, Jazz began to try and take a more active role in Danny's ghost fighting in "Secret Weapons". Although she means well, her inexperience has resulted in more than a few embarrassing defeats for Danny (sucking him into the Fenton Thermos) which almost ended in the two siblings drifting apart. To prove Danny wrong, Jazz ventures to the home of Vlad Masters (a.k.a. Plasmius) in hopes of helping Danny out, but she is forced into combat with Danny. After working together to defeat Plasmius and his evil plan to use Jazz as a super weapon, and smoothing things out between the two of them, she decided to try and help Danny from a less active role by taking on her previous role of covering up for him by being a distraction.
She even talked to her parents about how their obsession with dissecting a ghost is the reason why Danny never told them about his secret in "Reality Trip" (his parents later lose this knowledge when reality is "reset" at the end of the episode). She has also started writing her college entrance thesis, and researching books such as: "Ghost Envy for Dimwits - Ghosts Are Not the Boss of Me."
[edit] Personality/Weakness
Jazz, being the older sister and feeling the most rational of the family, takes it upon herself to be the "mature" figure, often criticising her parents obsession with ghosts and protecting her younger brother. While she may not know it, she often uses her intelligence as a means of superiority over others, going completely bonkers if she's proven wrong and often using her older sister status to "boss" Danny around, acting more like a mother than sister. Quite simply put, she's more of an adult stuck in a teen's body. Ultimately though, she means well, using her knowledge to point her parents in a more "normal" direction and keeping an overprotective eye on Danny, even if it sometimes is a constant annoyance to others.
Yet Jazz has proven to be one of the most developed characters in the show. As the show progressed, Jazz started off as a rather snobbish genius who refuse to be assiocated with her parents while maintaining a serious attitude, only for her to later discover how much fun ghost hunting is and later embracing it, as well as tone down her serious nature and discover her inner child while still being her supportive self. Her sudden increased interest in ghosts have caused Jazz to imply or hint she is suffering from "Ghost Envy" when she states she desires to be a ghost to get her parents' attention.
As well meaning as she is though, her major weakness is that she isn't as well experienced in ghost fighting as Danny and his friends, resulting in her helping Danny from the background through that of making sure no one discovers his secret, especially their parents. Though she does show some aptitude in utilizing the Fenton gadgets, most notably the Fenton Peeler, and others from time to time.
[edit] Relationships
[edit] Danny Phantom/Fenton
Her relationship with her brother at first seem to be strained as he often viewed her as snobbish, cold, and annoying no matter how much she tried to bond with him, often worrying about him and protecting him, basically treating him like he's a helpless child that needs guidance and direction. Over the course of the story and especially by "The Ultimate Enemy", their bond has strengthened with both of them looking out for one another, with Jazz finally realizing Danny is more responsible and mature then she thought.
[edit] Jack and Maddie Fenton
She wasn't too keen on their ghost obsession at the beginning, feeling rather the odd man out with the two. After "Maternal Instincts", Jazz slowly started to understand her parents' job and ghost obsession. Her probable status as having a half ghost brother has presumably up the ante over as well on her recent interest in ghosts herself. She has since come to better respect her parents, if not still criticising them instead for often overdoing it. Jack admits in "Doctor's Disorders" that Jazz is his favourite, and in "Masters Of All Time", it is hinted that Jazz's name was Jack's idea.
[edit] Trivia
- In "The Ultimate Enemy" Jazz's bumper says: "Have you hugged your inner child today?" In "Kindred Spirits"" there is also a bumper sticker on the Specter Speeder saying "My Kid's an honor student at Casper High", obviously referring to Jazz herself.
- It seems that in "The Ultimate Enemy", that Jazz has no friends because she brags about her intelligence without even knowing it, despite being rather popular in school.
- Jazz's car in "The Ultimate Enemy" seems to resemble a Volkswagen Thing.
