[edit] License tagging for Image:Churni Bridge.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Churni Bridge.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 21:07, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image tagging for Image:Jayanta.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Jayanta.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:HrishitaaBhatt.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:HrishitaaBhatt.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}. If you have not already done so, please also include the source of the image. In many cases this will be the website where you found it.

Please specify the copyright information and source on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 05:30, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:AmritaRao12.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:AmritaRao12.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 04:49, 2 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof 04:49, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ranaghat

I have been working on the West Bengal town pages and intruded into the Ranaghat page, which I find was basically developed by you. It is nice to see a town page with a lot of information. However, I do not find much references on the page. I am sure you can add some references. Without references, some of the matter runs the risk of being deleted at some point of time and all your good work will go. Looking forward to see more contributions from you. Regards. -- P.K.Niyogi 00:20, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] John Matthew Matthan

A tag has been placed on John Matthew Matthan, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Tikiwont 09:25, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Amrita Rao images

Hi, saw the images of Amrita Rao that you added to the article. The licences specify that the images were created by you and that you grant permission to use it in any way. However, taking a screenshot of a copyrighted movie does not allow you to give that permission, as you do not become the copyright holder just by taking a screenshot. (If you took the shot on the sets, you would have been the copyright holder!)

Such images classify as Fair Use Images and there are strict restrictions on how such images can be used. Usage Policy for Fair Use Images of film screenshots state clearly that the image can only be used for critical commentary and discussion of the cinema and television (emphasis mine). This means that the image can only accompany discussion of the movie and not for general identification of the actor or actress. Having the gallery does not accentuate any discussion on the movie. Also, being a collection of images, it hardly has enough encyclopediac value. Both make it susceptible to removal. Same holds for your addition of the gallery of images to Ishq Vishk and Vivaah.

However, some of the shots may be used. Both the Vivaah and Ishq Vishk articles can have one image, floated on the side of the article - provided you replace the {{GFDL}} or {{GFDL-self}} tag with {{Film screenshot}} and provide a rationale saying why it will be fair use if it is used in the article (Fair Use Rationales should be provided for each article it is used in). For the Amrita Rao article, things are a bit tricky. Since there is not much commentary about the films, we cannot use the images. However, if we add prose about the films (one paragraph each), we could use one pic (per film) alongside the text.

There is also a growing consensus on deleting fair use images of all living people. However, since that is not yet an official policy or a guideline, we can use any one of the images, provided it is augmented with a detailed rationale why a free image is not being used, in the infobox.

Hope I am not misunderstood. :) I am not removing the galleries for now. But I request you to update the licenses as soon as possible. Since you have been notified that currently there is a fair use violation, Deletion Policy states that the images can be deleted after two days. Also, using the wrong license can get you banned.

Feel free to contact me anytime if you need any help concerning any change to the article(s), or otherwise. --soum (0_o) 08:08, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Please update Image:vivah_eight.png with a fair use license and a rationale why it is being used on the Amrita Rao page. (See Image:Alizee - A Contre Courant.png if you need help, or contact me). --soum (0_o) 07:40, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Vivah seven.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Vivah seven.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Fritz Saalfeld (Talk) 13:01, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hindi name

Hi, saw you added hindi name of Amrita Rao in the article. Was wondering whether it is अमृता राउ or अमृता राव ? --soum (0_o) 12:23, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edits to Amrita Rao

Regarding this edit of yours, I would like you to point out that Wikipedia works due to collaborative editing by the users, and by consensus. Neither you own the articles, nor me. So, it is no competition to see whose edits persist. I can take your edit as a personal attack, which is strictly forbidden by the policies. If you disagree with some edit, you have three talk pages - yours, the other editor's and the article's - to engage in a productive dialog, and sort out the differences. Being pushy about your version will only turn editors against you. And it is a surefire way to get yourself blocked. As is being being incivil with other users. Also, I would like to remind you of the three-revert rule - more than three reverts in 24 hours will get one blocked. Please be civil and use the talk pages.--soum (0_o) 12:38, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Also, take a look at the policies Reliable Sources, Attribution and No Original Research, which, in a line, states that all facts must be sourced, and any fact which is not supported by a secondary source may be removed any time. --soum (0_o) 12:41, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Its Ok !!

Hey Soumya !! Its okay. I thought that info (regarding a twin sister) was authentic. So kept on persisting with that. Anyway, thanx and well wishes for u.

Sure, no problem... :) IMDb, is a credible enough source, but not alwyas authentic. Thats why here we do not accept IMDb-sourced info to be set in stone (after all, its also user submitted). If you find a mainsteam manazine or publication (not the glamour or gossip magazines) saying it, it may be added back. --soum (0_o) 13:50, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bangla Wikipedia

Hi Jayant, this is Ragib. I'm active in both English and Bangla wikipedias. Since I assume that you are a Bengali speaker, would you like to contribute to the Bangla wikipedia too? Right now, we have 15,400 articles there, but need more people to contribute regularly. Especially, we have a lack of editors from West Bengal, resulting in a somewhat lack of info/articles on WB.

To contribute there, all you need is unicode Bangla installed in your machine. We have integrated Bangla typing, so you don't need any special typing software. (Just tick the checkbox above the edit window ... you'd be in phonetic bangla mode).

Please let me know if you have any problems editing there.

Thanks in advance. --Ragib 20:16, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Jayant, thanks for your reply.
Actually, the barrier of language is a big roadblock towards spread of technology. You said that any net surfer should also be able to understand English. Actually, that's not completely true as most net surfers are not able to understand English wikipedia properly (I'm not hand waving here ... my research for an upcoming paper reveals that English wikipedia articles require a high school level education to understand fully).
Next, you're forgetting at least 90% of the population who can't read English. In Bangladesh, we as part of Bangladesh Open Source Network are creating a completely localized computing environment ... with Bangla interfaces for Linux, Open Office, Firefox etc. An encyclopedia is quite relevant here.
Also, you might be looking at it from the web-only perspective ... but we are also creating CD release plans for Bangla Wikipedia.
In 10 years, anything not available online will probably go away from the human mindset. Bangla is a very rich language, and Bengal has thousands of years of heritage. If we don't preserve it, no one else will. I recently expressed the above thoughts in a speech, you can look it up here.
As for the font issues, they are quite easy to solve, even in Linux. Please check WP:INDIC which shows you how. As mentioned, you don't need to install any typing tool.
So, please check out Bangla wiki when you can. --Ragib 19:52, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Jayanta, thanks for looking into my blog (and if you read the whole speech, double thanks).

I'm actually doing my PhD in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (got my MS from here about 2 years ago). I mainly work in computer security, but Wikipedia is my passion.

Now, back to your questions ....

  1. We are using a phonetic keymap ... following Avro's [2] mapping. If you are using Windows, you can download Avro from there, to allow Bangla unicode writing in all applications. You can dload it from here (slow site ... but works). (Configuration for Bangla unicode is shown here). If you just want to see the layout, you can find it here.
  1. The links to other language wikipedia articles that you see on the left are interwiki links. To do that, you need to append an interwiki link at the bottom of the English wiki article. For example, to link to the Bengali wiki article on Tagore, you'd have to add [[bn:রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর]] at the end of the page. To link inside to a bn.wiki page, for example, Tagore's, you can use [[:bn:রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর|Tagore]]. This will show up like this:Tagore.

Thanks for the comment on BD cricket team ... I just hope these enthusiastic youngsters (avg age = 22!!) will play with their heart ...

Let me know if you are able to configure Bangla properly. And once you are done, you can start by adding the article on IITs in bn-wiki. We don't have much info there ... our great contributor Dr. Saptarshi Mandal has single handedly contributed a lot about WB topics, but we need more ppl from WB. Hope to see you contribute .... Thanks. --Ragib 05:31, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RfA

Hey...its not like that. I am bored with finding attacks on ElGamal and RSA and Diffie-Hellman and what not. So, was roaming around here. Your userpage is in my watchlist...so it sort of just showed up. I did not have to go hunting for it. :)

And I am not an admin. I have a long backlog to keep me busy in the near future. But I do plan on attempting being one, in the near future.

To be an admin, you have to either nominate yourself or someone else has to nominate you. Then you and your edits will be evaluated by the admins as well as non-admins. And if consensus favors you, you will be promoted.

Theres no minimum edits required to be an admin. But generally 2500/3000+ edits is what most evaluators look at. Apart from that, they look at participation in non-article edits (like user talk pages to show how you interact with other users, discussion in policies and XFD) and of course vandal fighting and article editing.

Take a look at WP:RFA which details the entire procedure and requisites. Also be thorough with policies (also Category:Wikipedia official policy. All the best.--soum (0_o) 18:21, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Sure. Its soumyasch@gmail.com
Btw, which year are you in? --soum (0_o) 18:40, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
All I know about BDDs is learnt-a-day-b4-xam text-book knowledge. Never had any practical showdown with them. Sorry, I may not be of help in this case. --soum (0_o) 18:49, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] An Automated Message from HagermanBot

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button Image:Wikisigbutton.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! HagermanBot 18:22, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Just dropped by to say hello. Hi, how are you? Happy editing! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:28, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Yup I can see you are accelerating the speed of your contributions in Wikipedia! So, are you from Ranaghat? I am from Barasat. --Dwaipayan (talk) 14:44, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
My arrowhead is Barasat-->Kolkata! Nope I am not a college student anymore :( I studied in Calcutta Medical College and passed MBBS in 2005. Now preparing for some entrance exams. And, unfortunately, one such exam is on Friday (30th March). So I'll be offline now. Hehe. See you soon. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:01, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Image

Hi Jayant, An image can be shared by all wikipedias (i.e. in all languages) if it is uploaded to Wikimedia commons. However, commons only accepts images with free licenses such as GFDL or Creative commons, so you can't upload an image you can't release on these free licenses.

I'll look into Baraha ... though I'm pretty much settled in Avro ...

Thanks. --Ragib 16:19, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Interra Systems

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent contribution removed content from Interra Systems. Please be more careful when editing articles and do not remove content from Wikipedia without a good reason, which should be specified in the edit summary. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you would like to experiment again, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Rockstar915 05:13, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Life is ok

Hi jayanta! The important fact is the exam went, not how it went :) I see you are adding bengali names in many articles. Great job! Try to be there in bengali wikipedia, too. Ragib is doing fantastic job in Bengali wiki. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:37, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi! So you are suffering from Editcountitis! hehe, everybody suffers from it, at least initially. Then a phase comes when indifference comes towards edit counts. However, I checked my editcounts just now, and saw, well, i have passed 11,000!!! ([3]}. Jeez! However, I feel my kind of contribution is slowly changing, moving from article contribution towards portal maintenace etc. Have you been to Portal:India and Portal:West Bengal? You can also add Wikipedia:Notice board for India-related topics in your watchlist. The notice board is usually well maintained. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 07:27, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
