Jayyous

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jayyous (32°12′N 35°02′E; Arabic: جيوس‎) is a Palestinian village on the west border of the West Bank, close to Qalqilya. It is a farming community.

It is very close to the Israeli West Bank barrier. Around 75 per cent of the village's farming land is on the other side of the barrier. In order to get to their land the farmers need to go through Gate 25, which is supposed to be open for three short periods a day. However in June 2005 the gate was usually closed, and farmers were staging regular protests at the gate. The gates have periodically been open for longer periods of time; as of feburary 2007, the gates are open for only 3 hours per day- once in morning, afternoon and evening.

The mayor, elected in 2005, is a retired teacher of English, and a member of Hamas. He is also a farmer who has lost a large portion of his land behind the wall.
