P. Jayachandran is an Indian playback singer.

He has won National and State awards for the best playback singer many times. His national award was for the song "Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho" from the film "Sree Narayana Guru".

A contemporary of the all time great Yesudas, who has ruled the South Indian music world for more than 40 years, Paliath Jayachandran has carved his own niche and till now has around 15000 recorded songs to his credit in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu. Though not a classical singer, Jayachandran with his sweet and romantic voice has made light film music memorable with his immortal love songs which always tingle young hearts.

The intensity of this mellifluous voice could do such justice to love and romantic songs that Jayachandran is considered to be the most suited and god-gifted singer of love songs and is fondly called the "Bhava Gayakan". A great fan of Yesudas, Jayachandran is equal to the latter when it comes to popularity and fame. For Jayachandran, age too has not been a barrier over the years of singing. Indeed his voice is getting younger with the passing of time just as love and music are ageless and love songs are an immortal creation of god.

Being the son of a well-bred musician, music was not an extra curriculum for Jayachandran. He was with the presence of music from his childhood itself.

Jayachandran was born in 'Bhadralayam', Ravipuram, Ernakulam, and later his family moved to Irinjalakkuda. Fascinated by the beautiful notes of Mridangam, he began to learn the essence of that spectacular instrument at a very tender age. But he had not learnt any sort of classical music.

His musical insight and his genuine love for music had helped him in conquering an esteemed position in all the music contests he had participated. This helped him to be the maestro of music.

Jayachandran got his first state award in 1972 for the song "Suprabhatham..." for the film "Panitheeratha Veedu". Its music was done by Sree M.S.Viswanathan. The year 1978 brought him another state award. The song was" Ragam Sreeragam" for the film "Bandhanam" and the music director was M.B.Sreenivasan. He received a prestigious national award in 1985 for "Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho...", a Gurusthuthi sung for the film "Sree Narayana Guru". The song "Prayam Nammil..." from the film Niram " brought him a third state award in 1998.The song 'Anuragaganam pole....' which was really sung as a reserve grew to become a great hit unexpectedly and which enhanced the efforts of Jayachandran and Baburaj together.

He got the first Asianet award and the Arabian award for the same song in the same year. Its music was done by Sree Vidyasagar. In 1994, he received the Tamil Nadu state Government award for the best singer for the song , "Kathazham Kattuvazhi..." for the film "KizhakkuCheemayile". A.R.Rahman has composed the music. As a recognition for his contribution to Tamil film music, he was honoured with the "Kalaimamani" award of the Tamil Nadu Government. The most recent but the most valuable award that Jayachandran honoured with was the Swaralaya Kairali Yesudas award on the very beginning of 2001. The first of its kind and the first person to receive it , this award has a firm position in Jayachandran's heart. The motive behind this award is to choose the best from the singers and lyricists within a span of 30 years. This goes to prove that the contributions of Jayachandran is the best, was the best, and will be the best.

Jayachandran started listening to music at a very tender age and the first song he remembers to have heard is from film "Jeevithanauka". He still remembers the good old days when he used to run behind bullock carts announcing the latest film release in the town. The first movie he saw was also "Jeevithanauka" in Chendamangalam. He shifted to Irinjalakuda after a few years where he used to watch Tamil films especially of MGR and Shivaji Ganesan. He still remembers the films he had seen in those days such as "Neelakuyil", "Kalayanapparisu" and "Karppakam".

He began to sing devotional songs in churches at the age of 8. He still recollects Varghese Chettan who used to carry him on his shoulders to attend the church functions. He used to tell his Christian friends in those days that Jesus Christ would come to earth when he would sing devotional hymns.Jayachandran was also a great lover of Hindi songs in his young days. He used to hear the Binaca Geethmala just to listen to Mohd. Rafi, Manna Dey, Lata Mangaeshkar etc.

Jayachandran's first Guru was his school master K.V. Ramanathan. He was the one who had given a chance to Jayachandran to sing in the school stage at Irinjalakuda National High School. Jayachandran still cherishes the memories of his master with full respect. Another person to whom Jayachandran is highly indebted is G. Devarajan, the famous music composer in the Malayalam films. Jayachandran considers him as his father, Guru and also a friend. Jayachandran makes it a point to visit G. Devarajan whenever he is in Thiruvanthapuram. B.A. Chidambaranath is another music composer whom Jayachandran respects very much. He is the one who introduced Jayachandran to the Malayalm film industry by giving him a chance to sing in his film "Kunjali Marakkar" in 1965. He also holds P. Bhaskaran and Vayalar Rama Verma, noted lyricists of yester-year in the Malayalam film industry with deep reverence.

[edit] About Yesudas

Jayachandran met Yesudas way back in 1958 when he participated in the state youth festival. Yesudas won the Best Classical Singer award and Jayachandran got the best Light Music Singer as well as best Mridamgist award in the same year. After that Jayachandran met Yesudas, then a famous singer in 1965 in Chennai when the latter was staying with his brother Sudhakaran, who was a close friend of Yesudas. Yesudas used to visit Jayachandran's house in those times to meet Sudhakaran, who was also a singer. This was the beginning of his intimate relationship with Yesudas, who is like an elder brother to Jayachandran. The trio, Sudhakaran, Yesudas and Jayachandran used to ride in a motor cycle during their leisure times. It was Yesudas who took Jayachandran to a recording studio for the first time when he was singing a song, Manikya Veenayumayi for "Kattupookkal". Once the trio went to see a Hindi film called "Taj Mahal" and while returning home they imitated a song sequence from the film. Yesudas sang and Jayachandran danced to the song. Jayachandran considers Yesudas as a great singer and admires him. He believes that Yesudas has a god-gifted voice and is a great fan of his.

Jayachandran personally knew the famous comedy actor in the Malayalam film Industry, Innocent, much before the actor entered the film world. Both of them studied in the same school. The two had a childish rivalry in their childhood. Once when Jayachandran was returning from the school on a bicycle, he collided with Innocent who was walking on the road. Though Innocent was annoyed, this matter was amicably settled on the spot and they still love to remember this. To Jayachandran's utter surprise, when they met again after many years, Innocent jokingly mentioned this incident to Jayachandran.

[edit] About S.R Puttanna Kanagal

S.R. Puttanna Kanagal is perhaps the most famous Kannada directors in Karnataka. A very interesting but most moral episode regarding the relationship with this director and Jayachandran is that years back when Jayachandran had just entered the film field he was invited to sing a song for a Malayalam film of Puttanna by the producer of that film. Puttanna strongly opposed letting Jayachandran, a new comer to sing a sentimental song in that film titled "Mayor Nair" and the song "Swapna Sakhi" . Puttanna wanted Yesudas sing that song and believed none could match his voice. But luckily for Jayachandran he got the chance of proving himself and the song was an instant hit. Later when Jayachandran became well known all over India, he was invited by Puttanna to sing a song "Mandara Pushpavu Neenu" ( A Duet with S.P. Shailaja ) for a Kannada film "Ranga Nayaki". The song composed by M.Ranga Rao and penned by Vijaynarasimha, proved to an instant hit and the film itself was a great success. From that day onwards till the day of Puttanna's death, Jayachandran sang for his films. The next Puttanna venture he sang for was 'Maanasa Sarovara'. The song 'Chanda Chanda, Sangati Notave Chanda', composed by Vijayabhaskar turned out be equally melodious.
