[edit] Background

Jay is the grandson of Bert Atkinson and Evie Brown. His mother, Karen, died in 2004 of breast cancer. He was first mentioned on 5 December 2006, when a dying Evie told Bert that he had a grandson.

[edit] History

Bert attended Evie's funeral and saw a boy he presumed to be Jay. He did not talk to the boy, and as he was leaving with his friend, Pat Evans, a young chav on a bicycle asked Pat for a cigarette, and mocked Bert by calling him "granddad". Evie's friend Beryl then came and shouted at the boy for not attending his grandmother's funeral. Bert was stunned to learn that the boy was his grandson.

On 5 February 2007, Beryl brought Jay to live with Bert, saying that it was what Evie wanted and that Jay was Bert's responsibility now.

Bert tried to con Beryl into taking Jay back, but he discovered that Jay had scarpered. Yolande and Beryl searched for him, but Bert went to the pub. Yolande was outraged by his selfishness. Bert later found Jay at the bus stop and explained that he couldn't stay with him. He coaxed him home, where Beryl dragged Jay aside. She went to hit him, but Jay defended himself against her.

The next day, Jay didn't want to go to school, so Yolande let him help out in the shop, but he grew bored and stole some chocolate, and Deano Wicks caught him stealing from his stall. Bert found out and was furious, and Mo Harris sneered that stealing must run in the family. Jay was intrigued about his grandfather's criminal past, and persistently questioned Bert about it.

Jay spent the next day getting up to no good. He stole a silver locket from Deano's stall, while Carly (who was running the stall) wasn't looking. Deano realised what had happened and raged at Bert, who was forced to pay for it.

Bert warned Jay not to make the same mistakes that he did. Bert insisted that he's ashamed of his criminal past, and that Jay mustn't think of him as a hero. Jay worried that Bert would send him back into care.

Jay reacted with fury when Bert informed him that he would soon be attending Walford High School. Jay smashed Yolande's ornament, prompting her to demand that Bert and Jay both leave.

Yolande insisted that Bert acted upon a letter regarding Jay's truancy. Bert would have rather ignored it, but Yolande insisted that Bert take responsibility for Jay. Jay didn't care, as he thought that Bert didn't want him.

Bert didn't want to look after Jay in the half term, so Bert asked Peter Beale to look after him and show him around. Jay soon grew bored of doing nothing, so he persuaded Peter to break into Pauline Fowler's house with him. Peter didn't want to, so Jay accused him of being a wimp, and reluctantly Peter went in. Jay and Peter were later caught out by Yolande who saw a torch shining through the window and called the police.

Pat persuaded Ian Beale to let Bert and Jay move into 15a Turpin Road, and Ian told Jay not to graffiti in the flat. Jay called Ian a "tosser".

On his first day at Walford High School, Bert refused to give him dinner money, so he went without food for the day. Ian later acused him of stealing a bacon sandwich from a customer's plate at his café. Bert defended Jay, and was shocked to learn that school dinners were not free as he thought.

Bert decided to get a residency order so Jay could live with him permanently. Jay charmed social worker Derek Evans, who saw no problem with his welfare.

Bert later caught Jay with cigarettes and confiscated them. Lauren Branning bought some from Mo Harris and invited Jay to her house to smoke them, only to be caught by her mother Tanya.
