Jawan (from Persian Jawan or Javān, meaning "young") refers to a young man in Urdu, and also in several Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, and Punjabi. In South Asia, it has additionally taken on the reference to an infantryman, and is used in much the same meaning as troop or grunt in English.
