Jatibonicu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jatibonicu is a name in the Taino Arawakan Native American Indian language of the Lesser and Major Antillies of Caribbean islands. The term Jatibonicu [1] literally means "Great People of the Sacred High Waters" and is the original name of the central mountain kingdom of Cacique Orocobix in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico.
The Jatibonicu Taino tribe is located within the central mountain region of Puerto Rico. The tribe's original Pre-Columbian tribal territory covers the present day local municipalities of Orocovis, Morovis, Barranquitas, Corozal and Aibonito. Today the name Jatibonicu is recognized as the official tribal Government name of the Jatibonicu Taino Tribal Nation of Boriken, a tribe of Puerto Rico. See Taino tribe [2] and also see the Chief, Cacique Don Pedro Guanikeyu Torres. The Jatibonicu tribal government works in cooperation with various U.S Federal Government agencies and presently carries an un-official recognition status by way of the United States Federal Government agencies.
