Jason X is a 2002 science fiction and slasher film in the Friday the 13th film series starring Kane Hodder as the mass murderer Jason Voorhees. The film made $13.1 million with a $13.5 million budget [1].

The film was conceived as means of moving the franchise ahead while Freddy vs. Jason was still stuck in development hell. Jason X is set in the future (the opening scene being set in 2010, and Jason revealed as having been held captive since 2008 at the latest) so as not to confuse the continuity of the series.

The tag lines for this movie were "Evil Gets An Upgrade", and "Welcome to the Future of Horror. He's been drowned, chainsawed, knifed, axed, hammered, shocked, burned, spiked, nailed, shot and frozen. Now he's back for more."

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In the year 2008, Jason Voorhees is captured by the US government. Dr. Wimmer (a government scientist) and Rowan (a government researcher) lead several unsuccussful attempts to execute Jason. They decide to put him in cryonic suspension instead. When Jason is being prepared in a comatose state, a guard who was just supposed to put some more water on Jason accidentally awakens him. Wimmer decides to move Jason to another facility and has some soldiers lead by Sgt. Marcus transport him, despite Rowan's objections. When they enter the chamber, they find the guard's body instead. Jason kills the soldiers and impales Wimmer with a pole. When Rowan enters, Marcus tells her to escape while Jason throws him to his death. Rowan lures Jason into the cryonic chamber and activates it, but Jason uses his machete to lock them both in the chamber, freezing both of them.

In the year 2453, a ship lands on a desolate wasteland. 5 clocked figures enter a building that's revealed to be the facility. Professor Lowe is leading his students on a field trip. With him are students Tsunaron, Janessa, and Azrael, as well as an android, Kay-Em 14. They unlock the chamber, finding Jason and Rowan. Jason shows no signs of life, but Rowan does. Azrael loses his arm, but Kay-Em 14 cures the pain. The take Jason, his machete, Rowan, and Azrael's arm back to the ship, and the pilot, Crutch, takes them into space.

Lowe tells Crutch to alert the Grendal. They dock on the Grendal, a large ship. Sgt. Brodski, leader of a group of space soldiers on the ship, takes Rowan's body to one lab and Jason's to another. Fat Lou, the Grendal's pilot, takes them to Solaris, a space staion orbiting Earth II. Lowe has his intern, Adrienne, examine Jason with students Kinsa and Stoney, while he works on Azrael and Rowan in the other lab. Waylander, another student, performs surgery with Kay-Em and reattaches Azrael's arm. Lowe then turns their attention to Rowan, while Azrael is sent away to rest. Adrienne does a scan of Jason, while Stoney and Kinsa make out. Adrienne tells them to leave and they anxiously go to Kinsa's cabin. Adrienne reports that Jason is in excellent condition and can be studied. Lowe tells her to freeze the eye and study it.

Waylander awakes Rowan, who punches Lowe when she awakens. She is brought to Janessa's cabin to rest. Lowe tells his boss, Perez, about what he found, who doesn't care. Lowe visits Rowan, who tell him everything. Tsunaron is revealed to have created Kay-Em while fixing her and they kiss. Adrienne freezes Jason's eye, and while waiting, uses a scalpel to cut off his mask. She's disgusted and puts it back. As she studies the eye, Jason begins to awaken, as Kinsa and Stoney have sex. Jason awakens and sees Adrienne. She looks behind her and notices that he's gone. Jason darts at her from the opposite side and throws her accross the room. She desperately bangs on the soundproof window to get Waylander, but Jason grabs her and dunks her head in the sink of liquid nitrogen, flash freezing her head. He then smashes her face off on the counter and takes his eye off the microscope slide. He takes a tool that looks like a machete and leaves.

Rowan is introduced to the others and panics when she finds out Jason is on the ship. To reassure her of her safety, they take her to the lab, only to find Adrienne's corpse. Sgt. Brodski orders them to go to the other lab and calls the soldiers. Jason walks into Kinsa's cabin and stabs Stoney in the heart. Kinsa panics and leaves the cabin, running into the others in the hall. They take her with them into the lab. Brodski finds that Jason is in the cargo hold. The soldiers follow. One soldier they couln't find was playing virutal reality games with Azrael. Jason kills them in the game, then in real life. The civilians listen in the lab as the soldiers are picked off one by one, until only Brodski is left. Crutch and Fat Lou are completely oblivious to the situation and Fat Lou is hacked by Jason in the cockpit. Crutch is about to be killed when Brodski shoots Jason and tells him to get to the lab. Brodski fights Jason and is stabbed twice through the torso, however the tough soldier manages to survive. With no one flying it, the Grendal crashes into Solaris, damaging it so severely that the station explodes. As the group tries to come up with a plan, Jason charges in and they run away. They realize Lowe didn't follow. He thinks Jason wanted his old machete back, gives it to him, and is beheaded.

Crutch says he can detach the shuttle they used to get to Earth, but they need someone in the cockpit. He goes to the Grendal's cockpit, Rowan, Janessa, Waylander, and Kinsa go to the shuttle, and Tsunaron and Kay-Em go to the armory to get weapons. Crutch does what he needs to when Jason electrocutes him. Kinsa forgets to disconnect the gas line, causing the shuttle to explode with her in it. Rowan, Janessa, and Waylander find Brodski injured. Jason arrives, but an upgraded Kay-Em takes him out (blowing off his right arm, left leg, and most of his head in the process) and leaves him in a section of the sickbay.

With the ship severely damaged and leaking atmosphere, the survivors send out a distress call, and it is soon answered by a patrol-shuttle. Meanwhile, the Nanotechnology in the sickbay brings Jason back in a more powerful cyborg form. The group sees him after curing Brodski. Kay-Em tries to battle him again, but he knocks her head off with a single blow. Tsunaron grabs her head and Brodski sets explosives designed to separate the remaining pontoon from the damaged vessel. They try to escape the section, but Jason breaks Waylander's back. He stays behind as the the others escape. He blows himself up to kill Jason, but Jason survives. As the rescue shuttle attaches to the Grendal, the group decides to destroy the Grendal to destroy Jason. Jason unches his way back into the ship, causing an explosive decompression that eventually kills Janessa. Needing some time, they use a simulation of Crystal Lake to distract Jason while Brodski goes EVA to open the damaged airlock. Rowan, Tsunaron, and Kay-Em escpape onto the shuttle, while Brodski closes the airlock and confronts Jason so the others can escape. As the shuttle leaves, the remains of the Grendal explode, and Jason is sen hurtling towards them. However, Brodski uses the maneuvering jets on his space-suit to catch Jason before he can reach the shuttle. The three survivors see Jason and Brodski fight through space, and hurtle towards Earth 2, where they burn up in the atmosphere. Tsunaron promises Kay-Em a new body as they enjoy the view with Rowan. On Earth 2 itself, two teenagers decide to investigate the nearby lake where a shooting star has just fallen; we see Jason's charred mask settle to the bottom as the film ends.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Trivia/Notes

  • In the scene where Dallas is smashed against the wall by Jason, the stuntman making this stunt actually broke his nose.
  • When the character "Stony" opens the door and gets stabbed, and his blood sprays in Kinsa's face, she screams. According to the audio commentary, the effects guys were not supposed to spray the blood into her face. She was screaming not because she just saw her boyfriend die, but because the fake blood was burning her eyes.
  • The "virtual '80s" scene was originally meant to be much more detailed, including a number of topless women playing volleyball. One idea even included the appearance of Pamela Voorhees, Jason's mother, and even went so far as to have Jason attack her, showing the extent of just how evil he had become. The latter idea was dropped.
  • The "sleeping bag death" scene was first done in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, and was actually ad-libbed by Kane Hodder in that film out of frustration at re-shooting the same scene over and over.
  • Originally, the bio-mechanical Uber-Jason was meant to be a surprise for the film's finale. But because of early script reviews and foreign posters, New Line Cinema decided to make Uber-Jason the major advertising gimmick for the movie.
