[edit] Geography

The Kesang River runs through the center of Jasin town. The Kesang River separates the new town from the old town center. The old town center consists of mainly old 1920s 2-storey shophouses where small business is conducted on the ground floor and the owner has his residence on the top floor. Modern commercial buildings adorn the new town area and only one bridge over the Kesang River connects the new town to the old town.

[edit] Business

Main businesses are conducted by the Chinese with a handful of Malays, South Indians and Gujaratis. The Gujaratis in Jasin are mainly furniture dealers and the Mavani family has a monopoly. A popular shop amongst locals is located along the same row where the Mavani Furniture Shop is. It is called Chen Sing Stationery Shop. They provide all the essential stationery to the masses, as well as magazines, comics and newspapers. There are 2 major banks in Jasin -- Maybank and CIMB, which are also Malaysia's biggest banks.

Because the district has been designated as a water catchment area, industrialization is restricted to around the towns of Jasin and Merlimau. A large proportion of the land is used for the growing of rubber trees, oil palm and fruits. The area is also known for its durian fruits.

[edit] Infrastructure

[edit] Medicine

Jasin now boasts of a spanking new government hospital, the Jasin District Hospital. It is fully air-conditioned and utilizes the latest in technology to provide medical treatment to the locals. The hospital also serves as a teaching hospital for Melaka Manipal Medical College.

[edit] Travel

Jasin town centre is about half an hour drive from Melaka city centre.

From Jasin, one can travel towards the small town of Asahan, where it is possible to ascend the peak of Gunung Ledang in Johor via this route. Asahan is a border town where one can find wonderful waterfalls.

Jasin also borders the district of Muar, particularly the town of Tangkak in Johor. The two towns are located about ten minutes drive apart.
