Native to Japan, the Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus) is one of the largest salamanders in the world. It averages a meter in length and can weigh up to 25 kg.

The Andrias japonicus was first catalogued by Europeans when the resident physician of Dejima island in Nagasaki, Philipp Franz von Siebold captured a giant salamander and shipped it back to Leiden, the Netherlands in the 1820s.
