Janet Clarke Hall (JCH) is an Anglican residential college of the University of Melbourne. It was originally established by Trinity College as a residential hostel for women students, in 1886. It eventually became an independent college in 1961, and co-educational in 1973. Janet Clarke Hall is one of the smaller residential colleges affiliated with the University of Melbourne. JCH is led by Principal and historian Dr Damian X. Powell. Notable ex-residents include famed Australian essayist Helen Garner, Dame Margaret Blackwood (founder of the Genentics Department at the University of Melbourne and Professor Sally Walker, Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University. Notable ex-tutors include historian Manning Clark and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Marilyn Warren.
Janet Clarke Hall presents itself as a leading academic College. Students live within a heritage-listed building with multiple facilities. A classically-sized College, JCH offers its students academic and pastoral support. The college also has a strong connection with the arts. The current Artist in Residence, Dr Anna Goldsworthy, is a world-renowned pianist.
JCH students are offered opportunities to participate in the arts, a wide range of sports, drama, debating, and a social calendar including balls, dinners, and parties. Academic and community service scholarships were awarded to more than a third of JCH's students this year.
Many of JCH's activities are run entirely by students. The Student Club of Janet Clarke Hall Inc. provides students with support and organises social, sporting and cultural activities. Particularly significant is the college's "Orientation Week," inducting new students into the unique culture of JCH. It is reported to have been "the best week of my life" for many. The Student Club is administered by an eight-member executive, comprising President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Female & Male Sports Reps, and a General Rep.
The college provides recognition of academic achievement through scholarships. The most prestigious of these are the May Dunn Scholarships, currently held by Madeline Mitchell, Johanna Rayner and Hannah Foster.
