Jane Holmes Dixon

The Right Reverend Jane Holmes Dixon served as Bishop of Washington, pro tempore from 2001 to June 2002 in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. Previously, she served as Bishop Suffragan from 1986 to 2001. She was the second female consecrated as a bishop in the Episcopal Church.

Bishop Dixon earned fame for her lawsuit against Christ Church, Accokeek during her tenure as bishop pro tempore. Having failed to respond within the bishop's canonically allowed time of thirty days to the church's required notice to her of a new rector, she sued the church to prevent their new rector, the Reverend Samuel Edwards, from taking office. After several appeals, the lawsuit was dropped after Bishop Dixon retired following the election of Bishop John B. Chane.
