Jan Fethke

Jean Forge is the pen name of Jan Fethke. He was born 26 February 1903 in Oppeln, Silesia, and died 16 December 1980. He was a Pole and worked as a film director (at UFA, with Fritz Lang) and as a successful author.
Jan Fethke learned Esperanto in 1919, as one of several brothers Fethke active in Esperanto. His first novel in German appeared when he was only 18 years old. After high school for several years he edited the periodical Esperanto Triumfonta. Beginning in 1932 he tought successful courses in Sweden using the Cseh-method.
He was inventive, rich in ideas, and a witty representative of enjoyable light literature with a talent for psychological observation and a precise knowledge of effects. His most important Esperanto works are Abismoj (~Abysses) and Mr. Tot Aĉetas Mil Okulojn (~Mr. Tot buys a thousand eyes), which have been translated into several languages. Fritz Lang's last film, La mil okuloj de D-ro Mabuse (~The thousand eyes of Dr. Mabuse) was based on Mr. Tot Aĉetas Mil Okulojn.
His films have appeared since 1928, among them the most successful being: Transe de la strato (~On the far side of the street) and Vojaĝo de Panjo Krause en feliĉon. (~Mommie Krause's trip into happiness). He also directed an Esperanto film: Morgaǔ komenciĝos la vivo (~Life will start tomorrow).
He was a collaborator of the review Literatura Mondo (~Literary World) and many other periodicals.
