Jan Commelin

Jan Commelin (23 April 1629 - 19 January 1692), botanist, born in Amsterdam, died in the same city. He was professor of botany in Amsterdam. He was alderman of the city and in that position lead the arrangement of the new botanic garden. He cultivated very exotic plants there. Jan Commelin did a great deal of the work in publishing Hortus malabaricus of Rheede, of which the second and third volume are enriched with his commentaries.
His nephew Caspar Commelin (1667-1734) was a botanist too and director of the Amsterdam botanic garden.
