[edit] About "Fist of the North Star names"

Just wondering (in regards to this edit) -- which piece of media you've cited ("Games, Pachinko, Trading Cards, Zippo, etc.") and what part of Japanese Google confirms that the English names Bart and Julia are "mistranslations" and not name changes? It just leaves me curious that you left Lynn and Lin as name changes but not the others (which seem likely to be changes suitable for English audiences). -- James26 04:12, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Haven't you checked the gallery containing a photography of each exemple (game, pachinko, trading card, zippo) in the GOODIES section I've specially created to show evidences (I've also left a detailed note on the DISCUSSION). "Bat" and "Yuria" are the real names used in Japan. The same way "Yuda" is a mistranslation of Japanese "Judas", "Julia" and "Bart" are mistranslations. What part of Google? Man just make a search in www.google.jp and you'll find evidences by yourself. About "Rin" I was not sure about the real name used in Japan for this character (didn't searched/found any romaji version evidence), but as the "Rin" name doesn't exist in Japanese and I know the Lynn Minmey character in Macross is also written "Rin" (and that I have often seen the "Lynn Minmei" romaji form in official products and movie screenshots), therefore I think the "Rin" katakana form stands for "Lynn". BTW last week I had the Jissen Pachislot game on Playstation 2 which is based and contain 4 Hokuto No Ken real pachislots (Kenshiro version, Raoh version, Battle version, Yuria -not Julia!- version) I've found the "BAT" romaji form for this character.   • By the way "Julia" is also used in the French version of Fist of the North Star aired in my country for the first time in 1988. I don't remember about "Bart", I'll check this for you and will report here.

I know that "Yuria," "Bat," and "Rin" are the official Japanese names; I have the original Japanese series subtitled -- though I'd probably rather be playing the games like you :). My point was something different. I'm just not sure that the English names of "Julia/Yulia" and "Bart" are mistranslations (which implys that the translators made mistakes). I'm suspecting that the English names are just deliberately changed, which would make the description "sometimes translated as..." more appropriate than "sometimes mistranslated as..."

    • Does this detail really bugs you that much? Yeah you're right, they probably made localisation for Julia and Bart after all, i'm not the person who sale license at the Toei company. But "Yuda" is an hint toward the mistranslation since "Judas" is a known figure in the West and "Yuda" means nothing for us, i mean there is no objective reason for a "Judas" (Japan) to "Yuda" name change for export except... a mistranslation, my opinion. Also the different variations for Yuria ("Yulia") and Bat ("Batto") are also mistranslation hints. But if it really bugs you, i see no objection about stating the name change is part of the localisation.
    • About the TV series i have to admit i don't watch it nowadays (now i find the graphics obsolete) but i was fond of it as a kid in the '80s. I guess i'm just to old to appreciate it as i did when i was younger. And yes the french dubbing/adaptation is awful as i'm an Original Version Subtitled in English/French fan like you. I was not disappointed by the Berserk TV series (Jap' sub in English) though! :) And good games too!
    • About the Hokuto no Ken games.... it's more nostalgia for me you know. I actually don't play them to much, ("where the good times gone?") and i would not recommend you to spend a buck on them (terrible graphics!) except for the original BGM Ai o Torimodose in Jissen PachiSlot Hisshou Hou!
