[edit] Discussion
What is the meaning of the bandname "Jamiroquai"?

[edit] £1,000,000 Deal
There's no such thing as a £1,000,000 deal. All the separate costs payed by the record the company might have (doubtfully) added up to this figure but the actual deal itself could not be worth £1,000,000. Does anybody know what the actual figure is? It would be good to change it as this is misleading...
- This is quite plausible. With that contract worth (apparently) £1m, Sony had basically secured Jay Kay's entire career. Sony saw massive potential in JK, and signed him up on the strength of one single "when you gonna learn". Sony seized the opportunity, and made a mint out of him. Hence his current dislike of the label. Oh, and usually with contracts like that, the upfront amount is actually a LOAN. The artist usually has to repay this loan, over many years, out of thier royalties. [unsigned reply]

- Music industry deals are often quoted in this way. I agree it's misleading but the finer points on who actually gets what from music deal's are rarely made public. Canderra 13:13, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

- It's actually not a LOAN but a recoupable advance, which the artist does not have to pay back if they do not make any money. There is no such thing as a £1 million deal. The supposed £1m would include all the costs of marketing, A&R etc. which the artist would not recieve, and I also very much doubt they spent this much on Jamiroquai. I am aware that deals are often quoted this way in the tabloids but this is an encyclopedia and I think it should either be changed or removed.

[edit] Looking for a song
I remember a Jamiroquai music video from years ago that featured Jason Kay dancing around in a very white room where the floor kept moving. The furniture, from what I recall was black leather and stayed in place, while the floor moved. Can anyone name the song? Dismas 19:54, 28 July 2005 (UTC)
It's "Virtual Insanity"
[edit] Eh?
just two excerpts from the article...
Dynamite and was released on June 20, 2005. It reached #2 on the UK charts and 2005 Dynamite #3 UK
Now, is it 2nd or 3rd? i dunno better, otherwise i would correct it. im gonna leave it for ya fans :P
[edit] Jamiroquai's Vocabulary that was Demonstrated
Although the vocabulary Jamiroquai demonstrated in the quotes made in the article is completely relevant, I would just like to comment that they are rather vulgar, probably due to how he felt at the time. Syr0 03:06, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Jamiroquai and Maroon 5
Okay i might be a little off or it might be the sleepyness seeping in, but i think that the voice sounds almost identicle... the Jamiriqui voice sounds more youthful whereas the Maroon 5 voice sounds older, but this would make sence seeing as how Jamiriqui was befor Maroon 5... am i the only one who feels this way? remember this is only a theory of mine, i might be wrong, but i dont wanna be called an idiot because of it. if you listen to both of the groups then you might hear the similaities for yourself. like i said i might be wrong, and in no way am i saying they are the same singer, but it is cool that they sound almost identical
by the way, i am sorry about my typeing, i realize the spelling is probly all wrong and the non-useage of the uppercase lettering.

Yeah, roger that mate. Try listening to "Sunday Morning" the Maroon tune, and then listen to Virtual Insanity right after. Extremely similar songs (unfortunately), and I do think Maroon 5 took a genrerous bit of their sound from Jamiroquai.
[edit] One hit wonder??
Just caught an interesting episode of "One Hit Wonders" on Much Music in Canada (May 24/06). As the name implies, the Show basically shows videoa and talks about one hit wonders. I have no idea what constitutes a 1 hit wonder to whomever put the show together but I was surprised that Jamiroquai was featured for their hit "Virtual Insanity." The host mentioned that since that song we haven't heard much from them. Yet, Jamiroquai has released numerous successful albums and singles since then. A Funk Odyssey, for example, went double platinum. Am I wrong or is Jamiroquai anything but a hit wonder? (not that it matters, I'd like the band anyways but I found it surprising that Jamiroquai would be labelled a 1 hit wonder)
- Odd that a song which would rarely be stated as their most popular or famous was considered their "One Hit Wonder". Then again, I remember a similar sort of TV show I watched recently about One-Hit wonders in the 1980's which, for some reason, featured a couple of the decade's most successful bands. I guess TV show writers don't have much time to work out the actual content of the shows, most of their time is probably spent trying to script the dozens of awful z-list celebrity opinions that fill most the time within these shows. Canderra 13:07, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well, Jamiroquai has indeed sold a lot of albums and been in business, etc. since "Virtual Insanity". But I think if you define a hit as a song that reaches the top 10, 20, 40, what have you, that may be a true statement, at least for North America, that they are thus far a one-hit wonder. [edit] Rumours
Should this article really contain rumours about the bands future? Not only should an encyclopedic article be based around facts not magazine columist speculations, but the the rumours of breaking up seem very unlikely anyway considering the band has just signed up to a new major record label. [edit] Clean-up tag
Why has the clean-up tag been placed on the history section?
I'm not saying the section couldn't do with a clean-up (like saying an article cannot be improved in any way), but such tags should have a corresponding talk page section. Canderra 18:20, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, you're right. I'm the one who anonymously placed the tag onto the page yesterday. The section is a real mess, especially the dates. "Dynamite" is still listed as their "most recent" album. I've been thinking of splitting the whole text by eras ("Pre-Emergency on Planet Earth era", "EOPE era", "TROTSC era", "TWM era" (and so on), but the whole thing is just too messy for me to do that. MrFunkster 20:22, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
I cleaned this up today - rearranged and updated information, and added proper name to the greatest hits. NickBurns 17:34, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Proprosed removal of Jay Kay vs. Sony section
I believe that the quotes used in the Jay Kay vs. Sony section are not best suited for this article. For one, quoting Jay Kay using the F word multiple times for an encyclopedia article is not the best representation of the band (someone reading about the band for the first time might think their songs contain a lot of profanity, which is completely false). As well, the subsection itself is unnecessary and non-notable for the article. A simple "Kay expressed dissatisfaction with his longtime record label Sony Music." along with a reference might suffice. Other editors please post your opinion so that we can fix or remove this. Thank you. Bobo is soft 05:50, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- I say no. The quotes are too informative to be left out just like that, as they precisely describe his anger and dissatisfaction at the time. (Although what I really would agree on is to change the title of the section into something that doesn't sound like something that has to do with legal "troubles". I think you're also a bit wrong with the profanity thing. While their album songs are clean and not really profane in any way, many of the live versions are awfully profane at time ("The Kids", "High Times", "Revolution 1993" etc.).
