Great... now I'm confused again about copyright. "The Crowd" was released in 1928. How is this image in the public domain? Eleanor Boardman, who appears in the picture, has been dead just 15 years; the director, King Vidor, 24. Who counts as the author, and does it matter if the image post-dates 1923?
