My name is Lawrence Curtin. In 1979 I was a writer working on a story about the Black Tuna Gang. This was a group of dope dealers that was led by Raul D Avila out of Santa Marta, Columbia. All of the members were on trial in front of James Lawrence King in the US District Court in Miami.
Except there was one missing. That was Raul D Avila.
At that time I went to interview D Avila in Santa Marta. D Avila was very concerned about being kindnapped or murdered by agents of the US Government. I was told by his German girl friend that he had hired two "hitmen". I was also told by both Tony who ran the local beach disco that these two were hitmen and by the bellman at the Santa Marta Inn the same. In fact these two hitmen came after me which caused me to leave Santa Marta.
My getting to D Avila confirmed that he could be reached.
King at that time was desperatly afraid that he was going to be murdered by someone who was part of the Black Tuna Gang. On July 2, 1998 King wrote a document where he stated "...the heroic and dangerous actions taken by Mr. Curtin to help to prevent the assassination plans of certain defendants then on trial before the undersigned (King) in the 'Black Tuna' case."
You see the DEA at that time was tape recording one of the members phone calls while he was in jail. One tape recording suggested that he was going to have King killed. The problem with that was that Robert Platshorne who was in jail, was broke and had no way to kill anyone. Only D Avila had the money, the means and the reason to kill King.
In fact D Avila's fears were confirmed by the fact I had been offered $100,000.00 to kindnap D Avila, and I was told by the government agents that they did not care what happened to him on the way back. I took that to mean KILL HIM.
I thought long and hard over that proposal but conclued that I was a writer not a murder as the government tried to turn me into on a number of occasions because of my abilities to get in to interview high profile persons.
At that time King carried a gun to court with him and hid behind his bullet proof podium. He also had US Marshalls in his house peeking out from inside. I know because I went there at that time.
However King's true character came out in December of 1998.
I at that time was working on a story about corruption in the Key Biscayne Police Department. I was receiving death threats and continiual harrassment. At that time my 12 year old son was living in my house. I feared for his safety and wrote King a letter asking King to contact the US Attorney to have them stop Key Biscayne Police Chief Michael J. Flaherty's threats and harrassment. Instead of doing anything to help me. King met with a perjurer who was associated with Flaherty on December 11, 1998 in a secret meeting. This perjurer was part of a criminal network that was threatening me. Instead of helping, King at that secret meeting incited that criminal to do harm to my son and myself.
THERE ARE WRITTEN NOTES TO THAT MEETING. I have them.
James Lawrence King's acts are crimes and I am not the only one who he has done this too. I regret getting to D Avila. If I had not gone there perhaps D Avila would have put a bullet in King's head and by doing so would have put a end to King's criminal acts early on.
