James S. Sclater was born on October 24, 1943, in Mobile, Alabama. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received his D.M.A. degree in Composition. Later, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he received other degrees in Theory and Composition. Dr. Sclater is the Professor of Music and Co-ordinator of Music Theory at Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi. As the Professor of Music he teaches Advanced Music Theory, Counterpoint, and Orchestration. He has also taught Ear Training, Choral Arranging, and Band Arranging. Other jobs that Sclater has held in the field of music include clarinetist in the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, music librarian in the Austin Public Library, and Graduate Assistant in Arranging at the University of Texas at Austin. He has won various awards for his many compositions and for his works as a professor. Some of these awards include the Humanities Professor of the Year Award in 1998 from Mississippi College, an Emmy nomination for musical score for Mississippi ETV production The Mad Potter of Biloxi: George E. Ohr in 1994, and Music Composition Awards in 1980, 1990, 1995, and 1999. He has also been a part of several different professional associations such as the International Clarinet Association, the Jackson Wind Symphony, and the Mississippi Music Teachers Association.Dr. Sclater and his wife, the former Ann Judy Davis, currently reside in Clinton, MS. They have one child, Patricia Ann Sclater.
