[edit] Biography
Pilkington studied at the University of Westminster Film School, then found success directing short films. His first short 'Pocket' won the BBC Best Short film award 1998 and was sold all round the world. In 1999 Pilkington was commissioned by the BBC to do a 10/10 short resulting in the acclaimed kids film 'Disco'; during this period James ventured into commercial directing filming tvc's for AXA, Playstation (TBWA) and a test for Volkswagen. In 2000 James' short comedy 'Sweet' won the Empire Magazine best short film award, was a runner up in the London Film Festival and was nominated for a BAFTA.
Pilkington's strength as a director of comedy and performance is equally obvious in his commercials- his Tango commercial for Clemmow Hornby Inge moves effortlessly from deadpan nature doco to orange splattered lad madness. He gets inside an average blokes head in his large Carling campaign for the Leith agency, and in his famous Lynx commercial in which everyday jobs are all performed by the kind of women men only dream about.
