James Loughran (born 30 June 1931 in Glasgow, Scotland) is a Scottish conductor.
Loughran is best known for his numerous appearances at the Last Night of the Proms in the 1970s and 1980s. A task normally carried out by the BBC Symphony Orchestra's principal conductor, Loughran was chosen as the BBC SO was at the time under a non-British conductor, and it was seen as a British conductor's task. At the time, he was chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC SSO), a position he had held for several years in the 1960's.
Loughran has also been principal conductor of the Hallé Orchestra and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. He has been chief conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in Denmark since 1996. In addition he has conducted all the major UK orchestras.
