James Knox

James Robert Cardinal Knox (March 2, 1914 - June 26, 1983) was the Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne from 1967 to 1974.

Knox had been the Apostolic lnternuncio to India and the Apostolic Delegate to Burma and Ceylon. He was an Australian with wide experience as a Vatican diplomat, and was appointed Archbishop of Melbourne upon the retirement of Archbishop Simonds.

In 1970 he approved the extension of St. Patrick’s Cathedral's sanctuary into the transept crossing to provide the space required for the liturgy following the Second Vatican Council. The new sanctuary worked admirably for the many ceremonies of the 40th International Eucharistic Congress held in Melbourne in February 1973.

Later that year Archbishop Knox was created a Cardinal and moved to Rome as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

He died in Rome, aged 69.
