James E. Long

James E. (Jim) Long is the current North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance, the oldest democratic member of the North Carolina Council of State; he has held that post for 24 years and won a sixth term in the 2004 statewide elections.

Born to a North Carolina political family, Long, a native of Alamance County, North Carolina, served in the North Carolina House of Representatives, as had his father and grandfather. He also worked as legal counsel to the state house speaker and as Chief Deputy Commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Insurance. A Democrat, Long was first elected state insurance commissioner in 1984 and has held the post continuously since that date. He is married and has two children and five grandchildren.
