James D. Lynch (1839-1872) Was the first African-American Secretary of State in Mississippi, and a minister. Lynch attended Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire, but did not graduate. Coincidently, another future Reconstruction politician, Jonathan Clarkson Gibbs, also attended Kimball Union Academy, later becoming the first African-American Secretary of State in Florida.
