James A. Runde

James A. Runde is a Wall Street veteran specializing in strategic and financial advice.

James A. Runde is a Special Advisor and a former Vice-Chairman of Morgan Stanley. Throughout his 33-year career with the firm, he has worked on mergers, privatizations, and restructurings, with a focus on the transportation and infrastructure industries.
Since 2006, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of The Kroger Co., one of the nation’s largest grocery retail chains. He also served on the Board of Directors of Burlington Resources.
In addition, he serves as a trustee of The Morgan Library & Museum.

One of ten children, Runde grew up in Sparta, Wisconsin. A NROTC scholarship helped him through Marquette University, and following his graduation he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for five years on the staff of Admiral Rickover.
He graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1969. James Runde continues to be involved with his alma mater. In 2000, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Marquette.
He also earned a master’s degree from the George Washington University School of Business.

In the spring of 1969, Jim Runde's life was equal parts promise and peril. The 22-year-old from Sparta was engaged to be married, and he held an engineering degree from Marquette University in one hand and a fellowship to the graduate program at the Harvard Business School in the other. There was only one problem: He also held a commission in the Navy, the result of attending college on a Naval ROTC scholarship, a financial necessity given that his parents were schoolteachers.

James A. Runde has been elected to the board of Burlington Resources Inc., Houston. He is a native of Sparta and a graduate of Marquette University, on whose board he now serves.
Runde has worked for Morgan Stanley for 30 years and recently became a special adviser to the firm after serving as a vice chairman of its investment banking division.
