James's Fort (Irish: Dún Rí Shéamuis)is located on Castlepark peninsula in Kinsale harbour, on the opposite site of the River Bandon from Kinsale and overlooking the town. Construction of the fort, which is named after James I of England and VI of Scotland, started in 1602, immediately after the Battle of Kinsale, on the site of an earlier fortification, called Castle Ny-Parke, which accommodated the Spanish forces during the early part of the Siege of Kinsale -- until it was captured by an English contingent (commanded, according to Burke's Irish Family Records, by Sir Richard Smyth), part of the forces commanded by Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy.
