Jamal Williams (born April 28, 1976 in Washington, D.C.) is a defensive tackle for the San Diego Chargers. He stands at 6'3 and 348 lbs. He was drafted in the 1998 NFL Supplemental Draft by the San Diego Chargers out of Oklahoma State University. The Chargers switched to a 3-4 defensive scheme in 2004 and fielded Williams at nose tackle, arguably the most important defensive position in a 3-4.
Williams has since become widely recognized as by far one of the best 3-4 nose tackles in the NFL, and following the 2005 season he was named to his first Pro Bowl and was also named an NFL All-Pro. In 2006, Williams was named to his second straight Pro Bowl.
In 2006 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he accumulated 6 tackles and 1 sack while matched up against perennial All-Pro guard Alan Faneca. While not shown as a stat, he also recorded many QB pressures in that game, and was practically in the backfield on every single play. He was named defensive player of the week in week 5. This is a notable feat, as 3-4 nose tackles traditionally occupy blockers so that linebackers and defensive ends can more easily make plays.
