Jamaican slang has its roots in patois.

Much of the words used in the Caribbean relies heavily on the pronunciations and emphasis only found with local dialects. As such, many foreigners find it difficult to correctly pronounce most of the popular words.
Many words are shared among the Caribbean. Some are:
- chi chi - Refers to a gay person (E.g. Chi chi man).
- batty - Refers primarily to a person's butt, but it can be used to denote a gay man (E.g., "He's a battyman")
- Eediat - A very stupid person.
- Rass - Common word and expression meaning ass. It can also add intensity to objects or basic words in normal speech. Ending a word with clot/claat . (E.g. What de rasshole!)
- Bumbaclaat - The literal translation of this word is often lost, but many natives take large offense to this words' many uses.
