This file is in the public domain', because It is safe to assume that the copyright on this file has expired due to:
- New Zealand's public domain laws, according to the Wikipedia article, expire 50 years after the authors death. Assuming that the photographer is 20 when the photo is shot and lives and other fifty years, that puts his death at 1940. Plus 50 years on that and you get 1990. Thus this is public domain.
- Since New Zealand was still a colony of the United Kingdom in 1880s, public domain could be found in the following quote " If the work was created before 1969 with an unknown author then several scenarios can apply: If the work was published before 30 August 1989 then copyright expires 70 years after first publication."[1]
