Jalna district

Jalna is an administrative district in the state of Maharashtra in India. The district headquarters are located at Jalna. The district occupies an area of 7718 km² and has a population of 1,612,980 of which 19.09% were urban (as of 2001). [1]

Jalna district was carved out from Aurangabad District in 1981.

[edit] Battle of Assaye

The Battle of Assaye was fought in September 23, 1803 near the village of Assaye in south-central India. It was one of the decisive battles of the Second Anglo-Maratha War. Assaye is located near Jafrabad in Jalna district of Maharashtra. The battle was a decisive one in which the British were led by none other than Arthur Wellesley, who later became Duke of Wellington, and later the British Prime Minister.

In charge of a British and sepoy army of some 13,500 men, General Arthur Wellesley took on a major Indian force at least three times the size of his own at Assaye. The General later on went to defeat Napoleon in the battle of Waterloo in 1814. He himself describes the battle of Assaye as one of his finest battles.

The city of Jalna still bears ruins of a sprawling British Cantonment with an old cemetery still having graves of those killed in the Assaye battle.

[edit] Samarth Ramdas Swami

Samarth Ramdas Swami was a Hindu saint. He was born at Jamb Samarth, Taluk Ghansavangi, District Jalna, on Chaitra Shukla Navami Shake 1530, according to the Hindu Calendar. He was the younger son of Suryajipant Thosar Kulkarni and Ranubai. His actual name was Narayan.

Ramdas Swami wrote the Holy Scriptures Dasbodh, Manache Shloak and many more Shlokas. He coined the religious slogan Jai Jai Raghuveer Samarth.

He built Hanuman Temples in many villages across Maharashtra for the purpose of bringing discipline to youths.

He was also the Guru of Chatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosale, and guided him during establishment of the Maratha Empire.

It is due to the dedicated services of many people from Jalna district, that made Jalna as one of the leading Industrial, Commercial and Cultural district in Maharashtra State.

A Masters in Journalism, this guy from Jalna has risen to be a correspondent (for Aurangabad Division) for the highest circulated daily in India, HINDUSTAN TIMES. Having a long standing experience of investigative journalism in various papers of marathwada such as LOKMAT, The INDIAN EXPRESS, Manojkumar has come a long way. He is also a veteran of many a battles with the public ire against him such as the famous attack by the shiv sainiks on the Lokmat Office in Aurangabad.

[edit] Bhagwan Kale

Kale is a well known Marathi writer. He has written the Marathi book Aapla Jalna Zilla (English translation: Our Jalna Zilla), which covers all information related to Jalna district. He chose teaching as his profession and has retired as Vice Principal of J.E.S. College, Jalna.

He also worked as journalist for some of the well known newspapers viz. Daily Maratha, Loksatta, Sakal, Ajintha, and Tarun Bharat. He also wrote articles in these newspapers.

He is involved in many social and literature activities in Jalna district and as well in Marathwada region. He is a member writer of 'Gazateer of Latur District - Maharashtra'.

[edit] Dasoo Vaidya

Dasoo Vaidya is an imminent young poet, dramatist, script writer, and lyricist. He is the Head of Department of Marathi at Barwale College, Jalna. During the 37th Marathi Film Festival in 1999, Government of Maharashtra awarded the Best Lyrics award to him for his songs in the Marathi Film Bindast. He was awarded the Alpha Award for the film Bhetin 2002.

Janardan Nagapurkar, popularly known as Janardan Mama, was a freedom fighter from Jalna. He played an important role in the Marathwada Mukti Sangram, in which he lost his life fighting for his motherland

A square in Jalna city is named Mama Chowk in his memory.

[edit] Badrinarayn Barwale

Badrinarayn Barwale is the founder of Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco), which highlighted the name of Jalna on International map. He played a major role in introducing good quality seeds to Indian farmers and helped them to boost nation's food supply. He is also a freedom fighter who fought against the British Raj.
