Jacques Léglise Trophy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jacques Leglise Trophy is an annual boys' team golf competition between Great Britain & Ireland (in political terms the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland) and the Continent of Europe. It was inaugurated in 1958 and is organised by the R&A. Great Britain & Ireland dominated in the early years to such an extent that it was discontinued in 1966. It was revived in 1977 and the Continental team won for the first time that year. In recent years the teams have been quite evenly matched. Up to 1998 it was always played in Great Britain & Ireland but now every other match is played on the continent. Many leading professional golfers played in the Jacques Leglise Trophy as boys, for example Sergio García and Luke Donald.
Currently the teams are nine strong and the tournament is played over two days. The Great Britain & Ireland team is selected by the R&A and the Continent of Europe side by the European Golf Association. Great Britain & Ireland won in 2003 and 2004 but in 2005 the Continent of Europe regained the trophy by winning 14-10. In 2006 the Continent retained the trophy by the emphatic score of 19½-4½.
