Jacobo Morales

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacobo Morales (b. 12 November 1934 in Lajas, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican actor, writer and director whom many consider to be possibly the most influential film director in Puerto Rico's history.

Morales has been acting since he was a teenager. Morales was on Puerto Rico's television since its inception in the 1950s, up until the middle 1980s. He was the star of a comedy section on WAPA-TV's midday show. The section's name was La Fondita De La Esquina or The Little Store on The Corner. There, he played the store owner alongside Raulito Carbonell, who had two characterizations: an effeminate man (sexually ambiguous on purpose) and a Vietnam veteran.

After retiring from La Fondita, Morales dedicated himself to directing, and he became a legend in Puerto Rico when his movie, Lo que le Pasó a Santiago, became nominated in the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Movie. The movie didn't win, but the nomination itself solidifed Morales' status as one of the best directors ever to come from Puerto Rico.

Among Morales' credits:

  • Bananas (as actor) (movie, with Woody Allen)
  • Up The Sandbox (as actor, played Fidel Castro) (movie, with Barbra Streisand)
