[edit] Role in the books
Twilight
He has a small role in this book. He introduces Bella Swan, the protagonist, to the idea that Edward Cullen is a vampire.
New Moon
Jacob has a bigger role in this book. He comes into the story when Bella Swan comes to him to fix her two motorcycles. He starts to help her and ends up caring for her a lot. In this book, his transformation into a werewolf occurs. He is noted for his ability to shift forms very quickly. Although he develops a romantic attraction for Bella - even working against orders from the pack's leader in order to let her know about his transformation - she does not feel the same way. Bella describes him as her "Paris"- not her "Romeo" (that would be Edward Cullen), but someone who would make a more practical choice.
Jacob is hurt by Edward's return and by Bella's willingness to become a vampire.
