[edit] Services
Air Niugini operates services in and around Papua New Guinea using Fokker 50 turboprop and Fokker 28 Mk.4000 jet aircraft as well as Fokker 100 jet aircraft. It also uses the 100 on international services to Cairns in Australia and it operates a Boeing 767-300 to Singapore, Manila and Brisbane. Previously Air Niugini planes have been seen at Hong Kong and Tokyo. Other inter island services are also operated by other operators.
Cathay Pacific also used to operate flights to Auckland, New Zealand via Port Moresby, but these were terminated.
[edit] Security
Inside the terminals is a busy scene, with the slow moving lines and harried looking check in and baggage personnel typical of a major airport in a developing country. While there is a considerable security presence inside the terminal buildings (exemplified by the shotguns that the security guards carry) the scene on the outside can be quite chaotic. The visitor to POM is warned to ensure the security of their baggage, personal effects and the contents of their pockets when negotiating their way from the terminal doors to their (hopefully) awaiting transport.
Arrange hotel transfers in advance, confirm by ringing the hotel from inside the terminal building, and if the crowds permit, wait inside the terminal building until your transport arrives.
If you are part of a large group, an excellent tactic to ensure the retention of all your possessions is to place them in a large central heap and arrange your group around them, facing outwards, in a circle.
Alone, or in smaller groups, it is wise to position oneself immediately adjacent to an entry door, with a wall behind you, and close to a security guard if one is available.
