[edit] Early life
Jackie Tyrrell was born in Kilkenny in 1982. He was educated locally and showed great skill at the game of hurling in his youth. Tyrrell subsequently attended St. Kieran's College, a famed hurling nursery, in Kilkenny city. It was here that his hurling skills were developed and nurtured by the many hurling enthusiasts there. He won 2 Leinster Senior Colleges titles as well as an All-Ireland colleges medal with the school in the late 1990s. Tyrell later studied at Cork Institute of Technology and at Limerick Institute of Technology. It was at the latter institution that he won a Fitzgibbon Cup medal on a team trained by Clare's Davy Fitzgerald.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Tyrrell plays his club hurling with his local James Stephens GAA club. He has had much success at under-age level with "the Village" as the club is nicknamed. In 2004 and 2005 Tyrrell captured back-to-back Kilkenny SHC titles with the famous club. Both these county titles were subsequently converted into Leinster club titles. On St. Patrick's Day, 2005 Tyrell won his only All-Ireland club title to date.
[edit] Inter-county
Tyrrell first tasted major inter-county success with Kilkenny in 2003 when he won an All-Ireland medal with the under-21 team. He quickly joined the senior panel in 2004, winning his first National Hurling League in 2005. He subsequently captured his first Leinster title, however, Kilkenny were defeated by Galway in a thrilling All-Ireland semi-final. In 2006 Tyrrell was appointed captain of the Kilkenny senior hurling team. He had a successful year in charge, helping his team to capture a second consecutive National League title. Tyrrell subsequently captured his second Leinster medal and his first All-Ireland medal.
