Jack Mahon

Jack Mahon (1933 - 2005) was a famous Irish sportsperson who played Gaelic football for Galway in the 1950s.

Jack Mahon is considered one of the greatest players to play Gaelic football for Galway. A member of the famous St. Jarlath's team, he won an Senior Football Championship medal with Galway in 1956. He won a National Football League medal the following year.

Following Mahon's retirement from senior fotball in 1961 he earned fame as a writer and sports historian, having written a total of 19 books about Gaelic football and sport in general. His "History of Gaelic Football" is considered to be one of the most comprehensive accounts of the story of the game, while his most recent book, called "Memories", was launched at the beginning of the month.

Jack Mahon died on October 23, 2005 after a long illness. Mahon is the third member of the 1956 All-Ireland winning team to pass away in 2005, with team-mates Seán Purcell and Mattie McDonagh predeceasing him earlier in the year.
