JACDEC

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

JACDEC stands for the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre, a German organization which collects data on airline crashes worldwide. The JACDEC Safety Index was developed from their collected data. The Center also monitors current events and provides updates on airline safety issues.

[edit] JACDEC Safety Index

The JACDEC Safety Index is a probabilistic measurement of past airline safety. It counts the fatalities per Revenue Passenger Terameter Performed. Its unit is 1/m.

[edit] Example

If an airline has an JACDEC Safety Index of 0.5, then a person has to fly 2 Terameter on average to get killed due to being an aircraft passenger. (Note that 1 Terameter is about 25000 round-trips around the world. If one round-trip by aircraft needs two days, a person needs to fly continuously for about 274 years with an airline with an JACDEC Safety Index of 0.5 in order to get killed due to being an aircraft passenger. Thus, with such an airline, it is more likely to die due to other causes of death than flight accidents.)

  • For example, British Airways has a safety index of 0,03, so a crash is very unlikely.
