Jabal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jabal may refer to:
- The Arabic (جبل) word for mountain (also transliterated jebel and gebel). Prominent mountains include:
- Jabal al-Tariq or Rock of Gibraltar — "Mount of Tariq", named after Tariq ibn-Ziyad.
- Jabal al-Thawr, the mountain visited by Muhammad during the Migration to Medina.
- Jabal al-Nour, the "Mountain of Light" where the prophet Muhamamd saw first received revelation from Angel Jibreel. [1] The cave is named "The Cave of Herae". [2]
- Jibal, an emirate in a mountainous part of Iran in Buwayhid times.
- Lamech, descendant of Cain.
Jebel (plur. Jjibal), also written Gebel with hard "g" (plur. gibed), is frequently used in place-names. The French transliteration of the word is djebel. Jebeli signifies a mountaineer. The pronunciation with a hard "g" sound is that used in the Egyptian dialect of Arabic.
