J. Robert Wright

J. Robert Wright (b. October 20, 1936) is an Episcopal priest and scholar. Wright is a professor of Ecclesiastical History, or Patristics, and a recognized authority on Anglican and Episcopal history and doctrine. He was born in Carbondale, Illinois, and did his undergraduate work at the University of the South (Sewanee), from which he was graduated in 1958, and did graduate work at Emory University, the General Theological Seminary, and the University of Oxford. He has been active in ecumenical dialogue with the Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox churches. He is currently the St Mark's in the Bowery Professor of Ecclesiastical History at General Theological Seminary, and the historiographer of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. He is also the chaplain, in perpetuity, of the Guild of Scholars of the Episcopal Church and the President of the Anglican Society, as well as being a member of the Grolier Club and being a frequent lecturer at many prominent venues. He received an M.Div. from General Theological Seminary and a D.Phil. from Oxford University. In 1994, Bartholomew I, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, awarded Wright the Pectoral Order of the Phanar. Wright is often identified with the Anglo-Catholic wing of the Episcopal Church.
