J. N. Kellett Elementary School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
J. N. Kellett Elementary School is a primary school for kindergarten to grade 5 located one mile from downtown Seneca, South Carolina. Enrollment is approximately 400. It is part of the School District of Oconee County.
The principal is Mrs. Earnestine Williams, the school mascot is a tiger cub, and the school colors are blue and gold.
In 2000, the school became the first elementary school in the county to win the state's Flagship School of Promise[1], assisted in part by a partnership with Clemson University[2]. The school's recognition as a Flagship School of promise was renewed in 2003[1]. In 2006, the school won its second Red Carpet award for creating a family-friendly school environment and providing excellent customer service[3][4].
The school was the subject of a presentation at an Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development conference. The presentation showed how the school had integrated technology into the classroom and achieved improvements in student performance. The session, titled Instructional Technology Tools: The Great Equalizer, described strategies that "transformed a high-risk Title 1 school... into a vibrant learning community that is now the elementary technology model for the Oconee County School District"[5].
[edit] History
J. N. Kellett was constructed in 1954-55 and was originally called Southside Elementary school. The name was changed to honor the memory of John Newton Kellett, Sr., who was the superintendent of the Seneca area schools from 1945-1968.
