J. M. Cohen

J. M. Cohen (1903-1989) was a prolific translator (into English) of European literature. Born in London, he was a graduate of Cambridge University.
His translations, many of them for Penguin, included Don Quixote, Gargantua and Pantagruel, and the Essays of Montaigne. He also helped to edit many of the Penguin classics, alongside E. V. Rieu.
In its obituary, The Times described him as "the translator of foreign prose classics for our times."
