Izuru Kira (吉良 イヅル Kira Izuru?) is a character from the manga and anime series, Bleach. He is the lieutenant of the Gotei 13's 3rd Division, formerly under Gin Ichimaru. In the Bleach: Heat the Soul 3 manual, his name is incorrectly written in English as Iguru. Also, in the Wii game Bleach Wii: Hakujin Kirameku Rondo, Izuru's name is spelled as Iduru.

[edit] Character outline

Kira has blue eyes, and blonde hair worn as such that it covers half of his face. It also extends into two 'horns', although this is something relatively recent. Otherwise, his appearance is fairly ordinary compared to other shinigami. Although it is not explicitly stated in any official record, Kira appears to be left-handed or at least shakes hands with his left (shown in episode 46).

Kira is dedicated to both his friends and his duties, perhaps to the point of fault. Despite the close friendship he shares with Momo Hinamori, Kira shows that his loyalty shows no boundaries when he defends his captain from Hinamori while she is in a grief-induced rage from her own captain's death. Despite this, he calls himself a 'monster' afterwards for raising his sword against Hinamori.

Like many characters, Kira's past is not explored extensively. It is known that his parents, Kagekiyo and Shizuka Kira,[1] were dead before he entered the shinigami academy and that his family was one of the lower nobility.[2] This is also hinted at when Renji Abarai comments on how only the rich use a handshake as a greeting when Kira does just that.

While at the shinigami academy, Kira met and befriended Hinamori and Renji. The three of them were the top of their class, with Shūhei Hisagi as their upperclassman (in omake chapters Hisagi, Renji, and Kira usually spend time together). Having seen their potential, they were later placed in the 5th Division by Sōsuke Aizen. Renji's rebellious nature led to his move to the 11th Division, while Kira and Hinamori remained in the 5th Division with Captain Aizen and his then-lieutenant, Gin Ichimaru. Kira was later promoted to the 3rd Division as its lieutenant, under Ichimaru, now captain of the 3rd Division.

[edit] Synopsis

[edit] Soul Society arc

Kira's first notable appearance is when he finds Renji nearly dead at the stairs to the Shrine of Penitence. He and Momo Hinamori try to heal Renji, but are interrupted by Byakuya Kuchiki, who wants Renji arrested for his actions. Hinamori protests but Kira obeys, showing that Kira believes that obeying orders is more important than one's emotions. As an expression of this, Kira later confronts his friend Hinamori because the latter tries to attack his captain, Gin Ichimaru, even though Ichimaru is a prime suspect in the (apparent) murder of Sōsuke Aizen. Both Kira and Hinamori are arrested after Tōshirō Hitsugaya stops their fight.

Ichimaru later helps Kira escape from jail, and Kira stands by his captain when the 10th Division Captain Hitsugaya confronts them. He only backs away when the two prepare to battle, prompted by the arrival of Hinamori (now suspecting Hitsugaya of murdering Aizen) and her quick defeat by Hitsugaya.

When the two executive officers of the 10th Division come to appeal to the judicial chamber of Soul Society, Kira (under Ichimaru's orders) leads Hitsugaya away from the Chamber of 46, but mentions to Hitsugaya that he needs to protect Hinamori. Kira takes on Hitsugaya's lieutenant and Ichimaru's close friend, Rangiku Matsumoto, while Hitsugaya enters the city where the Chamber of 46 live.

Understandably, Kira is shocked to discover his captain was a traitor conspiring with Aizen (the true mastermind behind the conspiracy involving Rukia Kuchiki's execution). He is also horrified to learn that Aizen stabbed Hinamori, as he was told that she wouldn't be hurt. When Ichimaru leaves Soul Society, Kira drinks with Rangiku and Hisagi.

[edit] Bount arc

Kira, among others, is assigned by Tōshirō Hitsugaya to defeat the Bount in the human world. He helps Ichigo Kurosaki defeat Dalk, Koga Gō's doll, although Koga Gō decides to end the fight and walks away before Kira can seriously engage him.

After Yumichika Ayasegawa finds the Bount's hideout; Kira, Hisagi, Yumichika, and Matsumoto are ambushed by Ugaki's doll Gesell and delay the doll in order to allow Ichigo Kurosaki and Renji Abarai to proceed further into the cave.

Later, in Seireitei, he brings Orihime Inoue to Ichigo Kurosaki, Yasutora Sado, and Uryū Ishida.

[edit] Wabisuke

Kira's zanpakutō is Wabisuke (侘助, lit. miserable man, but can also be translated as apology). Its initial release command is "raise your head" (面を上げろ omote o agero?).

When activated, Wabisuke's initial release bends the blade into a square hook. In this form, Wabisuke doubles the weight of whatever it strikes. The ability affects both inanimate objects and living beings. Though a seemingly pointless ability in sword combat, the effect is cumulative. With a second hit from Wabisuke, the weight will double again and so on exponentially. Thus, after seven or eight blocked attacks, his opponents are unable to lift their own swords. Once Wabisuke's effect becomes noticeable, Kira's opponents often fall to their knees with their heads bent down, as if in apology, thus the name of Kira's zanpakutō.
