[edit] PLEASE help save Milton Country Park
Please help save Milton Country Park - the government wants to turn it into more "box'em in" 'housing' or a "traveller's site".
Visit http://www.miltonvillage.org.uk/fmcp/ - the Friends of Milton Country Park and support saving it by completing the petition at the following site
http://savemiltoncountrypark.com/faq.html - FAQs about saving the country park. |
[edit] Facts and figures:
- To keep the park running will cost around 70k per annum as an over-estimate.
- To move the current sewage works, back-fill the site, develop housing, develop the infrastructure (gas, electricity, water, etc.), maintain the service levels (fire, ambulance, police etc.) will cost millions but as has been proven will continue to drain money allocated for other things thus lead to an increase in other taxes.
- A concentration of housing so close to the already over-crowded (and classed "dangerous") A14 will lead to more accidents, road-works, congestion and CO/CO2 emissions.
- Hidden costs such as increasing police levels will cost more than the support of the park
- To run a Police Helicopter costs around 1 million pounds per year to run
- It runs over the existing "traveler camp" at least once per week accompanied by at least one car with 2 officers in it.
- The fire brigade has to put out at least one burnt-out car per week around or adjacent to the "traveler's camp".
- Estimated cost of basic support (just one call per week with one car and the Helicopter - not including Ambulance and Fire crews, cost to insurances, impact on house prices, impact on local community, etc) around the existing camp:
£74,000.00 - more than maintaining the country park and far less stressful and costly to the local community.
- It runs over the existing "traveler camp" at least once per week accompanied by at least one car with 2 officers in it.
[edit] How close is it to the community?
This link shows the park , how easy it is to get there and how it is big enough to be uncrowded with fishermen, walkers, ramblers and cyclists can have a good tour (about 1 mile round the large pond) but small enough to not be intrusive on developments around it or need that much maintenance.
You can also see how it is the only park like that for many miles around Cambridge. You can also see that it is North of Cambridge when South Cambridge Council are insisting on building there. You can also see that with the other land there is above and around to build on making it the center of a growing community rather than a wart on the edge. You can see that it is close enough for the community to share not just the local community. Indeed many lorry and van drivers on the A14 specifically come off the A14 or A10 (not as a lorry park - they park at the nearest Lorry lay-by) to spend an hour or so getting a cup of tea, stretching their legs, enjoying the scenery, etc. before driving on.
[edit] The broader concerns
Central Government has told local government to build more houses so they can move people out of crowded cities. This is (arguably) understandable - we must all play our part.
The fact it then expects the local government, local council, local people, to pay for it and claim it back in grants is cynical - particularly as history has proven that not all the money applied for is received.
This is the same government that set aside green-field lands to be protected, then allowed them to be sold off to organizations that build on them flaunting the law and the privilege - again something the locals have to pay for.
[edit] Summary:
Please sign the petition and help stop another area of community breathing space being forced into development that could so easily be re-located without much extra cost.
Help Milton Country Park become part of the hub of the necessarily growing community, not the wart to be removed.
