Iwate District, Iwate

Iwate (岩手郡; -gun) is a district located in Iwate, Japan.
As of the Hachimantai merger but with 2003 population data, the district has an estimated population of 110,931 and a density of 55.9 persons per km². The total area is 1,984.19 km².
There are three towns and one village within the district.

- April 1, 2002-The district acquired the town of Ashiro from Ninohe District.
- September 1, 2005-The towns of Ashiro and Nishine, and the village of Matsuo merged forming the city of Hachimantai.
- January 10, 2006-The village of Tamayama was merged into the city of Morioka.
