Ivory Tower (Harvard-Radcliffe Television)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ivory Tower is America’s longest running college soap opera. It was first conceived of in 1993 as the brainchild of Harvard-Radcliffe Television (HRTV), itself new on the Harvard scene.

[edit] History

Ivory Tower premiered in spring of 1994 and soon gained recognition as a trademark show of Harvard television. Ivory Tower ran for five years, with screenings in Loker Commons, House common rooms, and Arts First weekend. In 1996, the show, which enjoyed immense popularity and screened regularly, was featured in NBC’s Real Life. However, by 1999 interest in the strenuous soap opera format was waning and HRTV turned its focus to news, renaming the now scaled-down sidelined show “Tales from the Ivory Tower.” When the show reappeared once again as the soap opera in 2003, it had been on hiatus for three years. Brandon Presser ’05 proposed to bring Ivory Tower back -- sexier, newer, better filmed, and racier than ever. Since then, the soap has gone through a variety of executive producers, staffs, and casts, each redefining the content and direction of Ivory Tower both as a form of entertainment and as a pre-professional organization. In 2004 with now improved internet and equipment, Ivory Tower began uploading directly onto the Net, recognizing the internet as a way to reach far more viewers than ever before. Now in its fourth continuous season, Ivory Tower is the product of the joint efforts of over 40 producers, directors, writers, actors, and associate staff.
