Ivonka Survilla was born Ivonka Symaniec in 1936 in Stoupcy, a small town west of Minsk in Byelorussia (now Belarus) and is the current (Canadian-based) chairperson of the Belarusian National Republic (BNR), a Belarusian government in exile.

After a dramatic exodus through East Prussia, she lived in Denmark, France and Spain before moving to Canada in 1969.
