Ivan Drago (Russian: Иван Драго) is a fictional boxer played by Dolph Lundgren who was featured in Rocky IV in the Rocky series. He measures 6ft 6in tall and weighing 261 lbs.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ivan Drago is an amateur boxer from the Soviet Union armed with a punch over 2000 psi. His only defeat came at the hands of Rocky Balboa. (As an interesting side note, 2,000 psi is more powerful than the discharge of a shotgun at close range.).

His Soviet trainers were convinced that he would beat any boxer. Apollo Creed, 37 years old now, came out of retirement to challenge him to an exhibition match, and was trained by Rocky Balboa. Drago (24 years old) was completely unfazed by Creed's punches, and so overpowered Creed that he killed him (in the second round). To avenge Creed's death, Balboa traveled to Moscow to fight Drago.

Unlike the opponent from the previous movie, Clubber Lang, Drago is a man of few words. In the movie, his wife always speaks for him during interviews. He seems to be a very cold-hearted person as shown when he comments on Apollo's death: "If he dies, he dies". Drago appears to be fighting for his country but near the end of his fight with Rocky his promoter, a Soviet official insults him, prompting Drago to throw him off the ring and proclaim that he fights for himself. He is also a Soviet Gold Medalist as portrayed in the film Rocky IV.

[edit] Trivia

  • Drago appeared in the game "Ivan Drago: Justice Enforcer" which was made in tribute to the Rocky films. In the game, you play as Ivan Drago and fight crime in the streets and eventually you fight Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa. Most of Ivan's infamous quotes from the Rocky IV movie are in the game as well.
  • In the "Brian Goes Back to College" episode of Family Guy, Brian is training in the arctic weather and shouts out "Drago!". This is a reference to Rocky IV when Rocky climbs a mountain and shouts out Drago's name.
  • At the beginning of the fight in Moscow, the announcer uses the Russian pronunciation of Drago's name: in IPA, [jɪˈvan ˈdraɡə].
