Coordinates: 23°35′30″S, 48°03′11″W Itapetininga is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The population in 2004 is 137,733 and the area is 1796.2 km². The elevation is 656 m. This place name comes from the Tupi language.

It is situated in the Southeastern region of the state, and is known as the cidade das escolas, meaning the city of the schools.
