It Came from beneath the Sink! is a novella in the highly popular series, Goosebumps by R.L. Stine.
[edit] Plot
Two siblings discover a sponge living in their sink, that feeds on pain and suffering in this Goosebumps tale. The "sponge" has some rather odd properties. It seems to breath and is warm. When they pick up a mythical creatures book, they find it is called a Grool. From the book the oldest sibling learns that by having it in her possession, causes bad luck, often resulting in injury, to her and to those around her. After many failed attempts to dispose of it, she learns that it can not be destroyed in any violent or physical way. After a brainwave, she realises how to destroy it by doing the reverse. She sings lullabies to it and cradles it. The sponge freaks out, shrinking and drying up until it is reduced to nothing. The trademark Goosebumps end of story twist comes with a worse demonic potato-like creature called a Lanx, that was also in the book, falling into her possession. It is said to attach to a person with its teeth and suck the energy from them. It is also a relation to the Grool.
