It's a Wonderful World (すばらしきこのせかい Subarashiki Kono Sekai?) is an RPG being developed by the Kingdom Hearts team and Tetsuya Nomura of Square Enix for the Nintendo DS video game console. It's a Wonderful World takes place in modern Japan in Tokyo's Shibuya district. Players assume the role of Neku, a young empathic boy. Neku meets a young girl named Shiki and both are forced to play the mysterious "Death's Game" by the Shinigami Corp and must win it within the seven-day time limit or else be negated from existence. Neku's empathic abilities are essential to gather the clues needed, but also to detect the Noise, monsters that dwell inside a person's thoughts and are a hindrance to the heroes. Character designs are handled by Tetsuya Nomura, who brings his distinctive art style to the game, and Gen Kobayashi.

The Stride Cross Battle System, the game's combat system, uses both screens: one of four protagonists on the top screen and Neku on the bottom screen, with the fights taking place simultaneously. Players use the touch screen to move and attack with Neku, whose revealed abilities include lightning, fire, telekinesis (moving objects), and healing magic. Players also control movement on the top screen with the D-Pad, which is tapped for techniques.

More details for It's a Wonderful World were shown at Jump Festa in December of 2006, and the game is scheduled for an appearance at the Square-Enix Party this May. A 2007 release date has been set for Japan, and an interview with the staff claims that the game saw 50% completion in October 2006. There has been no word of a stateside release.

[edit] Characters

The first five main characters of the game that have been revealed so far.

  • Neku Sakuraba (桜庭音操 Sakuraba Neku?): An orange-haired, detached, empathic young boy forced to play Death's Game. His talent of tapping into people's minds to gather clues is essential to complete his ordeal in the game. He is able to dish out attacks by using a series of badges, which can be leveled up by acquiring badge points, or BP.
  • Shiki Misaki (美咲四季 Misaki Shiki?): A mauve-haired, seemingly outspoken girl who teams up with Neku after being forced to play Death's Game. She seems to bicker quite a bit with Uzuki Yashiro. Her fighting style involves magic-like attacks performed with her toy cat by a sequence of Dance Dance Revolution-like combinations.
  • Yoshiya Kiryū (桐生義弥 Kiryū Yoshiya?): A mysterious, grey-haired boy who calls himself Joshua (ヨシュア Yoshua?) and carries a cell phone and gun with him. He seems to know something about Death's Game, or, at least, more than Neku and Shiki do. In battle, he uses combinations much like Shiki; but he uses a cell phone to type out number combinations that let him attack Noise.
  • Daisukenojō Bitō (尾藤大輔之丞 Bitō Daisukenojō?): A large 15 year old, blonde-haired boy who wears contemporary street clothes and keeps Rhyme by his side at all times. He is nicknamed Biito (ビイト?). He appears to be hot headed and stubborn, and his reasons for coming to Shibuya are a mystery. Fighting as Biito uses a similar technique to Shiki and Yoshiya – but this time around, one must match up card combinations to defeat enemies.
  • Rhyme (ライム?): A small, blonde-haired girl who has the same hat as Biito; she stays by his side at all times. She is a very bright and cheery person, and is an all-out earnest young girl. Her fighting abilities are currently unknown.

[edit] Shinigami Corp.

The villains of the game, the Gamemasters of Death's Game itself. Their insignia is a skull & crossbones-style crest; each member has a pair of black, tribal-style wings on his or her back. So far, only four members have been revealed, with one other silhoutted.

  • Uzuki Yashirō: A mauve-haired, seductive young woman that is the first of its members Neku encounters. She seems to be somewhat of a scatterbrain.
  • Kōki Kariya: An orange-haired, glasses-wearing young man, always holding a lollipop and wearing a skeleton-themed outfit. He is quite cocky, but is, in a sense, the "brother" figure of the three.
  • Yōdai Higashizawa: The dreadlocked giant with one glowing yellow eye.
  • Minamimotoshō: 18 years old. He has dark skin, yellow eyes, violet-ash hair, and dresses in black trendy clothing with a red bandana underneath his cap. He is very intelligent for his age, but is a very cruel and brutal person. He is a high ranking member of the Shinigami Corp., but at times acts as a messenger.

[edit] Music

The game will feature music by Takeharu Ishimoto. The game's website currently features an unnamed piece heavy on brass and piano. The site's promotional video from Tokyo Game Show 2006 uses mainly house and trance, ending with a unnamed vocal song. The main theme of the game will be by the Japanese J-pop artist Jyongri, called “Lullaby For You”.
